Mother’s Day, Mayo, and the Mayhem

Mother’s Day, Mayo, and the Mayhem

When the Park is Closed, the Couch is Open

This past weekend was a total washout—literally. The rain was relentless, the clouds hung low, and the skate parks were soaked. But you know what? I didn’t mind one bit.

The Shred Session and the PJ Day

While Justin and Blake packed up their boards and headed to The Shred for an indoor session (because of course skating doesn’t stop for weather), I stayed home with the wild card—Asher. Just me and my littlest dude, vegged out in our PJ’s, watching an unhealthy amount of TV, and doing absolutely nothing productive. It was awesome.

Mother’s Day Moments

And it wasn’t just a lazy Saturday—it was also Mother’s Day weekend. Sunday was reserved for spending time with my mom (aka Nanna, according to the boys). Asher gave me the cutest clay heart he made at school—decorated with red paint, glitter, and tiny beads—along with a heartfelt card. Justin, in classic dad mode, asked the boys to tell me why they appreciated me. Blake’s response?

"You’re always making us fresh food."
Honestly, that might be the most accurate summary of my job description.

Lazy Eats = Happy Feet

Saturday’s menu was very on-brand for a lazy, no-effort day: chicken burgers and fries. I pan-fried some lightly seasoned chicken fillets in olive oil and served them on buns with fresh rocket and tomato. The boys loaded theirs with mayo. Quick, easy, and enough to make everyone happy without leaving the couch for too long.

Sunday we went to Nanna’s. My dad cooked up a spicy butter chicken with rice (chef’s kiss), but I made a milder roast chicken with potatoes and veg for the boys, who aren’t quite ready for the spice life. It was a good balance—family, food, and no dishes on my end.

Injuries, Ice Packs, and the Skate Life

Of course, no skate sesh is complete without some kind of injury. Blake came home with a swollen knee, Justin with a puffy elbow. Nothing dramatic, just the usual bumps. Justin always jokes that “The Shred always gets him.” My heart still sinks a little every time someone limps through the door, but once I know they’re okay, it’s ice packs, laughter, and couch time.

I don’t often get a break from the park. Even when I do stay back, I’ve got Asher—who’s basically five kids in one. But those rare weekends where I can trade ramps for cartoons, boards for burgers, and just pause for a moment? I treasure them.

To My Fellow Skate Moms

These rare, rain-soaked weekends where I can press pause and skip the park are pure gold. If you're out there making fresh food, grabbing the ice packs, or just holding the fort while your crew shreds—know that you're seen, appreciated, and probably overdue for a nap.

Until next week,
The Skate Mom
